The are individual grants offering promising experienced researchers the chance to develop their skills by means of intersectoral or international mobility. The projects must be carried out on the premises of a host organisation in another country than the current country of residence.

Two types of fellowships exist:

• European Fellowships (EF) for postdoctoral researchers moving within or coming to Europe for 1 to 2 years.
• Global Fellowships (GF) for postdoctoral researchers who wish to work outside Europe followed by a mandatory return period of one year to an institution in Europe. As to the European Fellowships financial support is provided for a period of 1 to 2 years, for Global Fellowships this is 2 to 3 years.

There is one call each year which usually closes in September.

The  aims to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields of research. Project proposals and candidates are merely judged on the basis of scientific excellence. ERC funding schemes are open to top researchers of any nationality or age who wish to carry out their frontier research in the 27 EU Member States or in the Associated Countries. For postdocs the Starting Grants are the most relevant ERC grants as they can directly apply for such a grant. Postdocs however can also be recruited on ERC Starting Grants or other ERC Grants by the Principal Investigator.

are meant for talented early-career scientists who have already produced excellent supervised work, who are starting or ready to start their own independent research team or programme and who show potential to be an international research leader.
