Application for Exemptions
General Information
An application for exemptions requires you to submit a documented file demonstrating that you have previously earned credits in another programme and have therefore already acquired the competencies of one or more courses before starting the new programme. As a student, it is your responsibility to provide this evidence. If you are granted an exemption for a course, you will not receive a grade and therefore will not be awarded a credit certificate for that course unit.
Applications for enrolment in the 2026–2027 academic year may be submitted between 1 April 2026 and 2 October 2026. Submit your application before 4 September if you wish to receive a decision before the start of the academic year.
Email your application to yufebuss@uantwerp.be
Requirements
 A complete application file must include:
- Your personal details;
- Full name
- Date of Birth
- Email Adress
- Telephone number
- If applicable, rijksregisternummer.
- The courses for which you wish to obtain an exemption, including the course code/study guide number and lecturer (please consult the programme page of the course you intend to follow);
- A copy of the diploma(s) from relevant previous studies, or credit certificates for successfully completed course units, or a copy of the diploma supplement(s) (official transcripts indicating the course units, ECTS credits and grades obtained). Screenshots of results are not accepted as valid proof of credit.
- The official course descriptions of all courses on which your exemption request is based, including at least information on the learning outcomes, course content, assessment methods and study materials. You must provide the course description from the academic year in which you obtained the credit for the course unit.
All supporting documents must be submitted in Dutch or English. Credit certificates and course descriptions in other languages will not be accepted. In such cases, the student must request an English-language version from the institution concerned.
Conditions
- If you have previously earned credits, you may apply for exemptions in your new programme on the basis of those credits from a previous programme. However, the credits must have been obtained in an academic programme.
- You do not need to be officially enrolled in the programme to apply for exemptions.
- If you are already enrolled, you must continue to include the course in your study programme, attend classes and participate in any continuous assessment activities until the exemption has been formally approved.
- You may submit only one exemption application file per programme or curriculum per academic year. Therefore, carefully consider in advance which exemptions you wish to request. Read the course information for all course units in your programme thoroughly and assess which units from your previous studies may be considered equivalent to course units in the current programme.
- Exemptions are granted only for complete course units; partial exemptions are not possible.
- Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be processed. Additional documents submitted later (for example, because credit certificates were not received in time) will not be considered. Incomplete applications will also not be processed.
- You may submit an application as soon as you have obtained a credit for the course unit on which your exemption request is based. Exemptions can only be requested for course units for which you have actually earned a credit. Exemptions based on a previously granted exemption or on a compensated/pass-by-deliberation grade are therefore not permitted.
- Approved exemptions will be registered in your SisA Self Service account. Please verify before the examination period begins that this has been done. If in doubt, contact yufebuss@uantwerp.be.
Bachelor's Programme
- Exemptions may be granted for both compulsory and listed elective course units; however, exemptions are never granted for the Bachelor's dissertation (Bachelor's thesis).
