Carlos, an international student from Colombia

Here's his story

鈥淚t鈥檚 easy to connect everything here: social, professional, and student life.鈥

Why did you choose the University of Antwerp?

When Carlos from Bogot谩, Colombia, began searching for a master鈥檚 programme in Europe, he was drawn to the University of Antwerp for its unique academic offering. 鈥淚 was looking for a programme that combined marketing with data 鈥 and I found that intersection here,鈥 he says.

But it wasn鈥檛 just the curriculum that convinced him. The international atmosphere, the dynamic student life, and the strong reputation of Antwerp鈥檚 startup and commercial scene all played a role. 鈥淚 talked to friends in Belgium who told me about the city鈥檚 professional energy. Between that and the cultural activities, it just felt right.鈥

What鈥檚 the programme like?

Carlos appreciates the practical approach of his studies. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a mix of theory and real-world cases. We work on current business scenarios and group projects with people from all over the world,鈥 he explains. The international aspect of the classroom has stood out the most: 鈥淭here鈥檚 a very diverse culture in each class. I鈥檝e made friends from all over 鈥 and I also enjoy mixing with locals. Every conversation is different.鈥

How鈥檚 life in Antwerp?

鈥淗onestly, I love it,鈥 Carlos says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a city where you can walk everywhere. There are museums, caf茅s, events 鈥 it鈥檚 really easy to meet people.鈥

One of his favorite spots? The student co-working space. 鈥淧eople are working on their own stuff, some are playing board games, others are studying 鈥 and you end up chatting with someone new just by sitting down. It鈥檚 a very social place, and great for focusing too.鈥

What about career opportunities?

Carlos didn鈥檛 wait until graduation to gain experience. After attending a local networking event, he landed an internship with a startup he admired. 鈥淚 just talked to one of the speakers, and next thing I knew, I was offered a position,鈥 he says. Now, he balances both work and study.

He emphasizes how accessible employers are in Belgium. 鈥淧eople in HR are really open to international students, as long as you鈥檙e prepared and show interest,鈥 he notes. 鈥淕o to job fairs, networking events, talk to people. It really works.鈥

Any advice for future students?

鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to connect,鈥 Carlos says. 鈥淯se LinkedIn, reach out to alumni, talk to current students,... everyone鈥檚 willing to help.鈥 Even when the paperwork and procedures feel overwhelming, he encourages new students to reach out. 鈥淭he university makes the process smooth, and there鈥檚 always someone who鈥檚 been through it and can give advice.鈥
