From data to detection: advancing the future of fraud analytics 01/07/2026 - 30/06/2032

Abstract

This project aims to further develop a strong and sustainable research programme on fraud detection and data-driven risk management at the University of Antwerp. Building on recent successes, including the establishment of an industry-funded research chair in financial fraud detection and participation in European projects (such as ELDA - Effective and Law-Compliant Data-Driven Solutions for Addressing Customs Risks), the initiative focuses on both expanding external funding and structurally embedding research and collaboration. On the one hand, the project seeks to strengthen participation in large-scale international funding programmes, such as Horizon Europe and MSCA Doctoral Networks, as well as to develop additional industry partnerships. On the other hand, it aims to lay the foundation for an interdisciplinary research center that brings together academia, industry, and policymakers to address challenges in fraud detection and prevention. The appointment of a dedicated research manager is key to achieving these goals by identifying funding opportunities, coordinating proposal development, and building strategic collaborations. This is expected to generate a strong leverage effect, where the initial investment leads to substantial growth in research funding, international visibility, and societal impact.
