25/04/2005 - 24/04/2010

Abstract

Financial Historical Analysis of Stock Exchange Related Data on the Belgian companies in Congo during the period 1891-1960. 01/01/2004 - 31/12/2007

Abstract

This project aims to analyse the Belgian companies in Congo quoted at the Brussels Stock Exchange from 1891 until 1960. The long term database (UA) allows to analyse the price and dividend evolution of the different companies and sectors of the Congolese economy. The case of the Congo-based companies offers a perfect opportunity to examine investment strategies towards such emerging (colonial) markets as well as several questions such as profitability, use of economic surplus and strategies of sectoral diversification.

Abstract

At this moment a number of propositions are made internationally concerning substantial debt reduction for the poorest developing countries. The objectives are to enhance development and to alleviate poverty in those countries. //..Therefore it is most important to evaluate if debt reduction can be an efficient and effective instrument for sustainable development, and in which measure debt reduction can be directly linked to poverty alleviation. //..Starting from a global analysis that has been made during the first year, the project aims to examine, firts of all in the prioritary countries to have a more specific view and to make specific policy recommendations for each of the countries.

Linking external debt reduction and poverty alleviation 01/07/1999 - 30/06/2000

Abstract

The project analyses the recent IMF/WB-sponsored debt reduction initiative for the poorest developing countries (HIPC-iniciative), more precisely with respect to the impact of debt reduction on poverty alleviation. In determining a sustainable debt level, one relies heavily on conventional debt indicators; poverty indicators are note explicitely taken into account. As such there is room for an improved debt sustainability indicator taking into the poverty situation of the country involved. Moreover, it asks for analysis on the effect on povety when debt is reduced and on establishing, more direct links between debt reduction and poverty alleviation.

A sustainability analysis of the IMF/World Bank sponsored debt reduction initiative for the poorest developing countries (HIPC-Initiative) 01/10/1998 - 31/01/1999

Abstract

The IMF/World Bank sponsored debt reduction initiative (HIPC-Initiative) is the most recent proposal to deal with the external debt crisis of the poorest developing countries, by proposing to reduce debt up to the 'sustainable' level. The crucial question, which this project deals with, is whether this proposal, and the amount of debt reduction suggestion, is a 'sustainable' way out of the debt crisis for these countries.

Abstract

The international community has shown its unability to cope with the (dramatic) problems in this region. One of the shortcomings is the biased information on which the international community has based its analysis. The network will try to fill this information and analysis gap. The approach will be multidisciplinary (socio-economic, political and juridicial).

Urban informal sector in Zaire 01/04/1993 - 31/07/1993

Abstract

With the emplosion of the modern economy people have to fend for themselves. They developed counter-crisis strategies that can have positive and negative effects on development. We estimate in the study the different components of the urban informal sector (survival strategies, destructive capitalism and small productive enterprises). We try to define these subsectors and look what potential they have for development.
