Effects of proteases, released by mast cells, on afferent pathways in the schistosomiasis inflammation model in the mouse gastrointestinal tract. 01/05/2003 - 30/04/2005

Abstract

PARs are one of the possible sensory oeuron-specific molecular targets that can be useful for therapeutic treatment in inflammatory bowel disorders and gastrointestinal pain. This project aims at elucidating the role{s} of these receptors in the neuroimmune interactions between mast cells and the afferent component of the enteric nervous system in our schistosomiasis inflammation model.

Localization of immuno-inflammatory cells in the respiratory tract of adult pigs. 01/01/2001 - 31/12/2002

Abstract

Ninety nine per cent of the Belgian pig farls have to cope with enzootic pneumonia. The fight against this disease had proven difficult. This study aims at verifyinig which immuno inflammatory cells are present in the lung. It is indispensable to map both the place of incidence and the number of affected cells. Equally important is to localize the primary disease germ, Mycoplasma Hyopneumoniae.

Immunocompetent cells (ICC) in the ileo-caeco-colic region of the growing pig: an exploratory study concerning the dynamics of the ICC in relation to those stages of life that are characterized by an intense stress. 01/05/1999 - 30/04/2001

Abstract

Intestinal pathologies, inducing serious economical losses in pig industry, are frequently located in the ileo-caeco-colic region. As a rule, these pathologies are related to intense stress periodes. The main objective of this preliminary study is to check, using modern lightmicroscopic techniques, wether stress induces clear changes in the local intestinal immunosystem leading to specific intestinal infections.

Confocal microscopy and 3D-reconstruction techniques as the means for solving a number of morphological problems related to the study of the enteric nervous system, the pulmonary acinus and the extracellular matrix. 01/01/1995 - 31/12/1998

Abstract

1) Enteric neurontypes are morphologically identified after intracellular marking; their synaptic input under normal circumstances is quantified; 2) They are morphologically characterized with inflammatory gut diseases and experimentally induced parasitory inflammation processes in the gut wall; 3) ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ of the extracellular matrix and its role in cell migrations; 4) Postnatal development of the pulmonal acinus.

Stereological investigation of broncho-alveolary lavages with the rat. 01/04/1994 - 31/03/1996

Abstract

After administration of body-foreign substances, the inflammatory reaction of the lung is followed through stereological research of inflammatory cells which are evaluated by means of light microscopy after broncho-alveolary lavage. The activity of alveolary macrophages, neutrophile, eosinophile and basophile granulocytes is followed through morfological as well as (immuno)cytochemical investigation.

Immunohistochemical and morphometrical study of the neuro-endocrine system in the primitive foregut of the pig. 01/04/1994 - 31/03/1996

Abstract

At first, using classical (lead-haemotoxiline, Grimelius,...) and modern (immunohistochemical, in situ hybridization) light microscopical research techniques, the occurance and spread of neuro-endocrine cells in the epithelium of the derivatives of the primitive foregut of the pig is mapped. Next, an investigation into the neurochemical differentiation of these cells is intended.
