I study host responses in acute and long-term sequelae of COVID-19, as well as bacterial pneumonia, to clarify the pathogenesis of the disease and to study diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. This includes soluble blood biomarkers, such as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, antibodies, and immune cells. I also study host-pathogen interactions in vitro using co-cultures between pathogen-host cells and in animal models. A second part on which my research focuses is bacterial biofilms, how different bacteria interact with each other, what the effect is on the host, and how these can be transformed into therapies. Negative interactions can be a target for new therapies and positive interactions for probiotics.
