The University of Antwerp invests in researchers who generate new insights and help address societal challenges. Through a range of excellence programmes, we give talent the space to grow, strengthen research, and build international collaborations.

Within the fifteen Centres of Excellence (OEC), researchers with an established international reputation combine their expertise around complex scientific challenges. With multi-year support, they further develop their research, explore new directions, and expand their international networks. This strong foundation also helps them attract additional competitive research funding.

Several Methusalem researchers are also based at the University of Antwerp. Thanks to this long-term Flemish funding scheme, they build strong research groups and create room for ambitious fundamental research with a long-term vision.

At European level as well, ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ researchers belong to the leading group. They regularly secure ERC Grants (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced and Synergy Grants), among the most prestigious research grants in Europe. This support gives researchers the freedom to develop groundbreaking ideas and push scientific boundaries.

The international visibility of our research is further strengthened through VLIR Chairs  at universities such as Berkeley, UCLA and the University of Pennsylvania. These chairs showcase the expertise of Flemish researchers to an international audience and foster academic exchange in areas including the culture, literature and history of the Low Countries.

Together, these initiatives contribute to a research environment where talent, collaboration and innovation take center stage. In this way, we create the space for research that enriches knowledge, pushes boundaries, and delivers impact both within and beyond academia.
