United for Maternal and Microbiome Health

Advancing health equity through microbiome-driven, interdisciplinary research and inclusive innovation.

Why U-MaMi?

Humans are not solitary biological entities, we live in constant interaction with trillions of microorganisms that shape our immune system, metabolism, development, and well-being. Health research has systematically neglected women, children, and disadvantaged groups. U-MaMi changes this by uniting microbiology, medicine, social sciences, ethics, and innovation into a true interdisciplinary ecosystem. Our name reflects maternal microbes' vital role in early-life health, plus "umami" the fifth taste symbolizing synergy from diverse ingredients working together.

Our 3 Pillars

  • Microbiome science: maternal microbes shaping lifelong health
  • Health equity: Targeting neglected populations with preventive strategies
  • Real societal impact: Citizen science, policy reform, stakeholder partnerships
