Maxime Van Goethem obtained a bachelor’s degree in Architecture (2023) at the University of Antwerp. During his studies, his interest gradually shifted towards urbanism and spatial planning, leading him to pursue a master’s degree in Urbanism and Spatial Planning (2025).
After successfully combining his master’s thesis with student work at The Design Sciences Hub over the summer, Maxime officially joined the team as a junior researcher in October 2025.
Maxime works on two projects. The first is about spaces that remain un(der)used in time and space in station areas. This exploratory, design-driven research aims to develop new, scalable insights for a more sustainable and efficient use of our scarce space. The second project involves a search for a balance between spatial quality, livability and health in the context of the Antwerp Ring Cover project.
Favorite (place in the) city
As someone from Antwerp, I’m of course morally obliged to name Antwerp as my absolute favorite city: the pocket-sized metropolis. I like to look beyond the popular hotspots and discover other lively squares outside the busy city center, such as Dageraadplaats or Troonplaats.
