Masterclass by Prof. Dr. Sanna Järvelä on "Advancing socially shared regulation in collaborative learning with AI"
1 April 2026 at University of Antwerp, Belgium
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp warmly welcomes you on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, to the masterclass given by Prof. , held on the occasion of the awarding of her honorary doctorate (promotor: Piet Van den Bossche)
"Advancing socially shared regulation in collaborative learning with AI"
In a constantly changing world, it is becoming increasingly important to understand what skills people need to continue learning. A crucial skill in contemporary learning contexts is the ability to consciously guide, monitor and adjust one's own learning process: self-regulated learning (SRL). This is a proactive and cyclical process in which learners set goals, plan, carry out tasks, monitor their progress and reflect in order to achieve their learning goals. Because learning increasingly takes place in collaborative and technology-rich environments, regulation is no longer limited to the individual, but also requires the coordination of shared cognitive, social-emotional, motivational and metacognitive processes.
My research shows that effective group learning is more than just coordinating tasks. It is about jointly steering the thinking process within the group: socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL). Group members jointly formulate goals, monitor progress and adjust strategies when necessary. In practice, however, this often proves difficult: learners do not always recognise regulatory challenges in time or do not know how to respond to them.
During this masterclass, I will discuss recent insights and developments in the theory of socially shared regulation. I will show how multimodal data and analysis techniques can help to identify regulatory challenges and how we can provide more targeted support to both individuals and groups in their learning process. I will also share findings from our ongoing Hybrid Intelligence research, in which we explore how humans and artificial intelligence (AI) can learn together. The focus is not on replacing humans, but rather on strengthening the autonomy and regulatory skills of learners. Anyone who wants to continue learning in the future will therefore need strong skills in self-regulation and socially shared regulation, increasingly supported by AI.
