Unfortunately, lung cancer is all too common: it is the third most common cancer and the one that causes the most deaths. As many as 1 in 5 cancer deaths are due to lung cancer. This is because symptoms often appear only at a late stage, making it particularly difficult to detect this cancer early.

Researchers at ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ/UZA aim to change this.

¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ with participants from the Antwerp southern region

Led by Prof. Annemiek Snoeckx, the ZORALCS study was set up: a pilot project focusing on the early detection of lung cancer in the southern region of Antwerp. The aim of the study is to examine how we can organise the early detection of lung cancer.

Early detection

The study focuses on people aged 55–74 who have smoked for a long time or who used to smoke. A low-dose CT scan is used to look for spots on the lungs that may indicate early-stage lung cancer. Early detection greatly increases the chances of recovery. Thanks to results from international studies, we know that low-dose CT screening can reduce lung cancer mortality by at least 20%. Your contribution opens up new possibilities

This study is made possible through the support and funding of various partners. To further expand the study in the future and to follow participants over a longer period, additional funding is needed. Donations are essential to make a positive difference for more participants.
